Assam: Police unearth QR code fraud in Bongaigaon, three arrested

Assam police on March 24 unearthed a vicious cycle of fraudsters who were supplying fake QR codes to shopkeepers, traders and owners of other business establishments in Abhayapuri under Bongaigaon district.

Local traders have been complaining of massive fraud in the name of supplying QR codes in shops or business establishments.

As per reports, if the customer buys goods from the shopkeeper and makes the payment via the QR code, money then enters into the account of the fraudster instead of the account of the shop owner.

One such fraudster was caught on March 24, evening, in Abhayapuri, identified as Rakibul Haque, who had given a Paytm QR Code to a shopkeeper identified as Banamali Das of Hirapara.

Banamali Das managed to trick the fraudsters and called the gang of fraudsters on March 24 sighting some issues and later handed them over to Abhayapuri police.

"My name is Banamali Das. I needed a bar code hence I enquired about the same from one Rakibul Hussain who said that he will provide me one within 10 days. 10 days passed, I called up Rakibul enquiring about the bar code. After 12-13 days the bar code and informed Rakibul how to activate the same. After activation I found that the money was being transfered to Rakibul's account instead of mine as Rakibul provided me his bar code. I was perplexed after finding this an questioned Rakibul how come his name pops up during payment while all documents provided to him was under my name. I called him and said he has to come and clear out this mess or else I will take police help. Hearing this, Rakibul asked for forgiveness and said that he will reach within two-three hours. Time passed but no trace of Rakibul hence I came to the police station seeking justice", said the victim shopkeeper Banamali Das while speaking to reporters

Apart from Rakibul Haque, two other youths were also arrested. The other two youths have been identified as Rafiqul and Jehangir. Police also seized a bike from the arrested trio, bearing registration number AS 19 J9246.
An investigation has been initiated by the Bongaigaon police to ascertain any further links to the case.
