Assam Pradesh Congress protest over 'illegal' tax imposition by IT department

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) staged a protest rally today at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati decrying what they allege as illegal tax imposition by the Income Tax department on the Indian National Congress (INC).

Led by key leader Mira Borthakur along with several other Congress members, the protest aimed to denounce the purported imposition of taxes on the INC which the party views as an affront to democracy.

The protest in Guwahati comes in the wake of a nationwide movement initiated by the Congress party against what it terms as a "egregious attack" on democracy and the imposition of "tax terrorism" by the Income Tax department. The Congress alleges that it has received fresh notices demanding over Rs 1,800 crore in taxes.

Earlier In response, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal has directed all Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) to orchestrate massive public demonstrations across the country. These protests are slated to take place over the weekend, with senior leaders and party functionaries expected to participate.

The Congress's decision to mobilize nationwide protests underscores its firm stance against what it perceives as an unjust targeting by the Income Tax department, especially amidst the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
