Dipti Saikia, one of the protestors who participated in a controversial nude protest during the district administration's eviction drive near Silsako Beel, has expressed remorse for her actions as she admitted that it was a mistake and should not have taken place.
Speaking to the media, Saikia revealed that another protestor, identified as Reeva Deori, was the first to get nude during the protest and subsequently pressured Saikia to follow suit.
"Whatever occurred, where women disrobed during the protest, was a mistake. I want to convey to the government that I made a mistake by engaging in such actions. It should not have happened. Several people told me that if I did this, the protestors would be saved," acknowledging her lapse in judgment, Saikia stated.
She further appealed to the government to provide shelter to those who have lost their homes due to the eviction drive.
"I implore the government to witness the distress and hardship people are enduring. They should understand the pain people are going through. We urge the government to offer shelter to these individuals. We have submitted 25 memorandums, all seeking the same. Every time I have participated in a protest, I have made this demand," she added.
The nude protest drew significant attention and sparked debate, prompting a reevaluation of the methods employed by protestors during eviction drives.
On September 1, pictures and videos from the protests surfaced on the internet wherein women protestors came out half naked to stop the eviction drive.
Women from the protesting community tore their own clothes as a sign of protest against the eviction.
They said that they would rather die than be evicted from their homes. However, the police tried to disperse the crowd, but the women refused to budge and detained several protestors.
It is to be mentioned here that on August 31, a heated environment flared up among the locals and police administration deployed in the eviction process.
The district administration went to the Silsako Beel for demarcation of the boundary in the evicted area.
