Assam: Rangia gripped by fear as local man's firearm misuse sparks outrage, one injured
A recent incident in Assam's Rangia highlights a concerning pattern of lawlessness and fear in the Dipti Nagar locality.
As per reports, Jyoti Prakash Sharma, also known as Baba, allegedly fired two rounds from his registered 0.32 mm pistol during a dispute with one Mridul Baniya, who was subsequently injured.
As per locals, the accused has reportedly been involved in similar incidents of brandishing his weapon, particularly one during the 2022 Durga Puja, has left residents in a state of fear.
The local police's quick response to the gunfire and seizure of the firearm shows an immediate attempt to contain the situation, but the ongoing terror caused by Sharma's actions, according to residents, calls for stricter measures.
The fear expressed by locals indicates that they feel unsafe in their own community due to this repeated behaviour.
The victim, Baniya, has been taken to Nalbari Medical College, and residents are urging authorities to take strong action against Sharma to restore peace and the rule of law in the area.

The testimony from a local resident paints a deeply troubling picture of the ongoing situation in Rangia's Dipti Nagar locality.
The resident expresses the intense fear that has gripped the community due to Jyotiprakash Sharma's repeated misuse of his firearm, stating that people are too terrified to leave their homes.
Sharma's actions, including firing his weapon in the middle of the night, have made it impossible for locals to feel safe, with sleepless nights becoming routine.
A local resident said, "We cannot sleep at night as he keeps firing his weapon. We are terrorized by his actions. In 2022, he fired at near a place of worship during Durga Puja causing people to flee almost ending in a stampede."
This history of dangerous behaviour makes the residents' plea for strict action by authorities even more urgent. They are calling for a return to law and order to end the reign of fear that Sharma's actions have imposed on the community.
