Assam: Rescue efforts intensify at Umrangso coal mine as water levels drop significantly

The ongoing rescue operations at the Umrangso coal mine, where miners remain trapped, have witnessed significant progress as water levels continue to recede. Harmeet Singh, Special DGP of Assam, provided updates on the situation, emphasizing the deployment of additional pumps to expedite the process.

"Currently, 12 pumps are operational—six in the main shaft and six in three other shafts," Singh stated. "The water level, which initially stood at around 30 meters, has now reduced to less than 15 meters. However, uncertainties about potential water inflow persist."

Singh highlighted a breakthrough in the efforts, sharing that the reduced water levels had facilitated the recovery of three more mortal remains. "We are optimistic that with further reductions in water levels and the opening of shaft arteries, tomorrow may yield additional results," he added.

The focus remains on clearing the pathways within the shafts, with hopes of enhancing accessibility for rescue teams. Singh expressed determination to continue the operation with the aim of bringing closure to the tragedy and recovering any remaining individuals.

In the ongoing rescue efforts at the Umrangso coal mine in Assam, authorities have identified the three bodies recovered so far.

The deceased miners are Khusi Mohan Rai (57) from Kokrajhar, Sarat Goyary (37) from Sonitpur, and Ligen Magar, a resident of Umrangshu in Dima Hasao district.

As water levels recede in the flooded mine, rescue personnel recovered a fourth body on January 11, bringing the total death toll to four with one recovered earlier this week

The search continues for five miners who remain trapped underground.
