Assam: Scuffle over panchayat president post disrupts swearing-in in Dhubri’s Agamoni

Tensions ran high in Agamoni, Dhubri district, on Wednesday after a scuffle broke out between rival factions vying for control of the Bhamandanga Gram Panchayat presidency.

The clash occurred near the Agamoni Block Development Office, just ahead of the scheduled swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected panchayat president, vice-president, and members.

Eyewitnesses said a verbal altercation between supporters of the two groups quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, creating chaos at the venue.

The exact reason behind the dispute remains unclear, though it is believed to be linked to disagreements over the formation and leadership of the panchayat body.

The Bhamandanga Gram Panchayat elections have been intensely contested, reflecting the high stakes often associated with grassroots politics in Assam. The incident has raised concerns over the peaceful transfer of power and the stability of the newly formed panchayat.

Officials are expected to proceed with the oath-taking ceremony under tight security to prevent any further disruption.
