Residents of Sribhumi district have accused the government of neglect after a minister’s promise to rebuild a damaged embankment within 15 days remained unfulfilled even after a year.
The incomplete work has left villagers facing hazardous travel conditions, while the embankment continues to deteriorate.
On September 1, over 50 men and women staged a protest in the Gandhai Muk area of South Karimganj constituency, raising slogans against Minister Pijush Hazarika.
Protesters demanded urgent reconstruction of the embankment, which they say is vital for their safety and mobility.
The embankment along the Longai river has been weakened for years, with cracks spreading across multiple sections. In 2024, floodwaters from the river breached the Gandhai Muk stretch, submerging several areas and leaving many families devastated.

Following the disaster, Minister Pijush Hazarika had visited the site and assured residents that repairs would be completed within 15 days to make the embankment functional again.
However, locals allege that even after a year, no significant work has been carried out. “On television and social media, we hear about development and progress. But in reality, this is what we face every day. Is this the development we are promised?” a villager said.
Residents warned that if authorities continue to ignore their demand, the situation could turn more dangerous in the coming monsoon season, potentially affecting vast areas with flooding.
