Assam: Sukapha Divas observed with grandeur in Margherita

The fifth annual Sukapha Divas (Asom Divas) was celebrated in Margherita on December 2 with solemnity and community participation. 

The event, organised by the Chaolung Sukapha Statue Management Committee with the cooperation of local residents, paid rich tribute to Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom and architect of greater Assam. 

The celebrations were held at the Sukapha statue site near NH-315, close to Margherita Town High School.

The programme began in the morning with the hoisting of the flag by Utpal Konwar, President of the Celebration Committee. Traditional prayers and rituals were performed, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp in front of the Sukapha statue by Dr Amarjit Saikia, Principal of Doomdooma Bir Raghav Moran Government Model College. The Maidam Tarpan was inaugurated by Debojit Baruah, marking a symbolic tribute to the Ahom ancestors.

A special segment dedicated to celebrated Assamese icon Zubeen Garg was inaugurated jointly by All Assam Land Records Employees’ Conference president Nitul Gogoi and Margherita Municipal Board vice chairperson Rajlakhi Gogoi.

An open meeting was later held, presided over by Utpal Konwar, with the welcome address delivered by Pabitra Borgohain. The meeting was formally inaugurated by Rana Jyoti Neog, General Secretary of the Tinsukia District Journalists Association.

Keynote speaker Pankaj Borthakur, Registrar of Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University, addressed the gathering, reflecting on Sukapha’s enduring legacy and its relevance in contemporary Assam. The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished personalities, including Assistant Commissioner Pritom Gogoi, Nabojit Baruah of the Margherita Co-District Administration, Tai Ahom Development Council Member Debojit Baruah, All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad President Kailash Gupta, and AALREC President Nitul Gogoi, among others.

The day-long programme highlighted unity, heritage, and the collective pride of Assam’s diverse communities, reaffirming Sukapha’s role in shaping the cultural and historical identity of the state.
