Assam: Teacher assaulted by youth in Barpeta district during Gunotsav programme

Sensation prevailed in Assam's Barpeta district after a youth assaulted a primary school teacher amid Gunotsav celebrations.

The incident happened today at Kalgachia at a school where the teacher identified as Nitumoni Nath engaged the students of the school in a cleanliness drive to clean the premises of the school right ahead of the Gunotsav programme. As luck would have it, some of the garbage reportedly blew off to a plot of land right next to the school allegedly due to strong winds.

The son of the plot, owner identified as Atiqur Rahman, barged into the school and assaulted the school teacher mercilessly in front of the teacher. The assailant reportedly beat up Nath with his slippers and also used objectionable words outraging her modesty in front of everyone.

Following the incident, sensation prevailed in the area as the Gunotsav festivities came to a halt as outrage poured in from the locals over the incident.

"He shouted at the children and also quarelled with me. He came over and assaulted me with his slippers. He pushed and assaulted me and abused me with highly objectionable words. His name is Atiqur, and lives near the school. I was alone at the school with the children at that moment. The rest of the staff had not arrived by then," said Nitumoni Nath, describing her ordeal.

"I am teacher and I cam here in the morning for the sake of these children. Why will he behave with me like this? I want that he be punished for what he has done. Why will I tolerate such type of behavior?" said the school teacher.

Soon after the incident, an official of the Kalgachia revenue circle reached the spot and assured the teacher of action in this regard. Till the filing of this report, there has been no report of any FIR filed or any arrest made in this regard.
