Assam: Tribal body demands arrest of illegal mine owner over death of two youths in Tinsukia district

The Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee has demanded the state government and the police administration arrest the owners of the illicit coal mine located at place number 12 in the Tipong Kaliari Chali area of Lekhapani.

Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee General Secretary and Spokesperson Pallab Shyam Wailung today said, "On September 19 during the Holy Ganesh Puja two youths died due to methane gas explosion at Tipong Chaali 12 number under 124 number Margherita Constituency of Tinsukia district which belongs to Rakesh Jaiswal and Bikram of Tirap gate."

Pallab Shyam Wailung said that the two deceased youths identified as Raju Rabha of Meghalaya and Dhireshwar Kachari of Goalpara belong to the Schedule Tribe Community. We demand the Assam Government and Assam Police to immediately arrest both Rakesh Jaiswal and Bikram Phakey at the earliest otherwise Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee shall intensify a strong agitational programme from Thursday onwards.

It is to be mentioned here that Patkai Hills has once again been marred by tragedy as it transforms into a perilous death valley. Two more coal mine workers have lost their lives in an illegal coal mine, and another has been left injured in the Ledo-Margherita area of Assam's Tinsukia district.

According to a worker who was present at the scene, "Three people were present: one was injured, and two had been killed. The police or forest rangers may arrive soon. All of them have left the site. This incident occurred at location number 12. The injured man suffered due to gas exposure, but he is expected to recover soon. I am unaware of his place of origin. The incident transpired this morning, and people refer to him as Limbu, the mechanic."
