Assam: Two days after eviction, elderly man dies due to severe cold in Goalpara

An elderly man named Boyat Ali, aged 55, from Goalpara district in Assam, reportedly died due to extreme cold weather conditions, according to reports on Saturday. Ali was a resident of the recently evicted Pancharatna NC village in Goalpara.

"You all know that few days ago, Goalpara administration and the forest department jointly carried out an eviction drive in Pancharatna area of Goalpara district. Nearly 50 families residing in Pancharatna area lost their homes after being completely destroyed in the eviction drive. The only fault of these people are that they are landless people. They are dependent on menial work such as rickshaw and bullock pullers. The real fact is there are numerous high rise buildings nearby but not a single damage to their buildings", said one of the AAMSU members.

On January 10, around 50 families, including Ali's, from the Pancharatna Reserve Forest area were evicted due to illegal encroachment on forest land.

As a result of the eviction, Ali and his family were left homeless, which led to him being exposed to severe cold conditions that allegedly caused his death.
