Two armed cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) have surrendered following a joint operation conducted by Assam Police, Military Intelligence, and Assam Rifles.
The operation, launched on the basis of specific intelligence received from Military Intelligence (Kolkata), led to the peaceful surrender of the cadres along with a significant cache of arms and ammunition.
The surrendered individuals have been identified as SS Lt Nabojit Asom, a resident of Bolaguri under Kumthai Police Station in Golaghat district, and SS Cpl Niku Asom, hailing from Meleng Lohkor village under Teok Police Station in Jorhat district. Nabojit Asom had joined ULFA-I in 2010 and received training at Taka Hku, while Niku Asom was recruited in 2020 and trained at the 779 camp.
Arms and Ammunition Recovered:
During the operation, security forces recovered the following items from the cadres:
01 HK Rifle
01 MQ Rifle
01 .32 Pistol
03 Magazines of HK Rifle
03 Magazines of MQ Rifle
01 Hand Grenade
150 rounds of HK ammunition
80 rounds of MQ ammunition
05 rounds of .32 Pistol ammunition

Authorities have termed this surrender as a crucial step in ongoing efforts to weaken ULFA-I’s operational strength and encourage more militants to return to the mainstream.
The Assam government and security forces have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
Further investigations are underway to gather more intelligence regarding ULFA-I’s activities and potential recruitment strategies. The surrendered cadres are expected to be debriefed by security agencies before any further legal proceedings.
The Assam government has been actively working towards bringing insurgents into the mainstream by offering rehabilitation and surrender policies. With recent surrenders and peace talks, the state's security situation continues to improve.
