Assam: Violent protest erupts in Kheroni, homes, shops, school bus and ambulance damaged

Kheroni town and its adjoining localities in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district witnessed a surge of violence on Monday after a protest spiralled out of control, leaving a trail of destruction across Nepali Basti and nearby areas. 

Boundary fencing, private homes and shops were damaged as agitated protesters allegedly went on a rampage, targeting both public and private property.

According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the situation deteriorated rapidly as demonstrators began vandalising structures and vehicles. A school bus was damaged during the unrest, raising serious concerns over the safety of students, while multiple vehicles, including an ambulance meant for emergency medical services, were also vandalised. Residents reported that several families were forced to flee their homes in fear as the violence intensified.

The destruction of essential infrastructure has severely disrupted daily life in the area. Damage to educational transport and emergency medical vehicles has affected access to critical services, compounding the distress of residents already grappling with the aftermath of the violence. Locals expressed anguish over the loss of property, stating that ordinary citizens bore the brunt of the unrest.

A resident, requesting anonymity, said the protesters claimed to be agitating over land-related issues but ended up destroying the livelihoods of innocent people. Community members warned that such acts of violence risk deepening tensions and undermining peace in the already sensitive region.

Police personnel have been deployed in and around Kheroni to prevent further escalation, and security has been tightened. Officials said investigations are underway to identify those involved in the vandalism and to assess the extent of the damage. 

Authorities and local leaders have appealed for calm, urging all parties to pursue dialogue and lawful means to address grievances.
