Assam: Woman's body found in 40-foot well, son detained for questioning in Kokrajhar

In a disturbing incident, the peaceful village of Nayekgaon in Assam’s Kokrajhar district was jolted by the discovery of a woman’s body at the bottom of a 40-foot-deep well, sending shockwaves across the community.

The deceased has been identified as Sumi Kisku, aged 40, a married woman and mother of two. According to reports, the incident occurred late Thursday night when Sumi was last seen sleeping in her room alongside her younger son. By morning, she was missing, and a search led to the grim discovery of her body inside a nearby well.

In a startling twist, the police have detained Sumi’s 16-year-old son for questioning. Authorities suspect foul play and are exploring multiple angles, though no formal charges have been pressed at this stage. The teenager’s role in the incident remains under intense scrutiny as the investigation progresses.

A joint operation was swiftly launched early Friday morning involving personnel from Kokrajhar Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and a forensic team. After hours of effort, Sumi’s body was successfully recovered from the well, which is estimated to be nearly 40 feet deep.

Kokrajhar District Magistrate Daradi Dev Ray, while addressing the media at the crime scene, confirmed the recovery and said:

“We received information about a suspected murder case involving a woman whose body was dumped in a well. Our team, along with SDRF and police, immediately initiated a search operation. The body has been recovered and the investigation is underway.”

He assured that all angles, including domestic and criminal motives, are being thoroughly examined.

Residents of Nayekgaon have expressed disbelief and horror over the incident. Known as a quiet locality, the village has rarely seen such brutal crimes. Locals gathered near the site, demanding swift justice and a transparent investigation.

Postmortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators are also collecting statements from family members, neighbors, and potential witnesses to piece together the sequence of events.

The case has not only raised serious concerns about the safety of women but has also sparked conversations around mental health and domestic tensions in rural households.
