Assam's Margherita BJP ticket race heats up, voters rally behind two-time MLA Bhaskar Sharma
Amid growing interest over the BJP ticket in Assam’s 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district, multiple aspirants have emerged, even as a large section of voters appear to favour sitting MLA Bhaskar Sharma for a third term.
Margherita, considered one of the key constituencies in Upper Assam, currently has four contenders seeking the BJP nomination. Apart from two-time MLA Bhaskar Sharma, the other aspirants are Khitish Debnath, Harish Suman Saikia and Anamika Rajbanshi, according to party sources.
However, feedback from various sections of the electorate suggests a strong preference for continuity. Many general voters in the constituency have indicated that they would like the party to renominate Bhaskar Sharma rather than field a new face.

Sharma first won the seat in 2016, defeating former Congress cabinet minister and four-time MLA Pradyut Bordoloi by a margin of 22,744 votes. He retained the constituency in the 2021 Assembly elections, securing a second consecutive term with a significant margin.
Supporters point to the development initiatives undertaken during his tenure as a key reason for backing his candidature once again. With the BJP yet to finalise its nominee, political activity in Margherita is intensifying as aspirants mobilise support and voters closely watch the party’s decision.
