Assam's Sribhumi embankment breached again, flood threat intensifies

At the very onset of the monsoon, the Sribhumi district has reported its first embankment breach.

The incident occurred in Gandhaimukh village under the South Karimganj constituency, where rising waters of the Longai River swept away nearly 200 meters of the embankment.

It is noteworthy that the same location in Gandhaimukh experienced a similar embankment breach last year, which had led to widespread flooding in the area.

Despite a visit from the concerned departmental minister after the previous breach, repair work on the damaged section was never carried out.

Currently, the Longai River is flowing above the danger level. As a result, the river has once again eroded about 200 meters of the embankment, parallel to the previous breach site.

Since evening, water from the Longai River has started entering nearby villages alongside Gandhaimukh, raising serious flood concerns.
