Barak valley flooded after 500mm rainfall in one day; over 1,100 villages affected

Assam Minister Krishnendu Paul has stated that the flood situation in the Barak Valley is extremely serious following record rainfall.

The region received over 500 mm of rain in a single day, submerging large parts of the valley from Sribhumi to Silchar. Water levels rose so high that rail tracks in Salchapra are now submerged.

Heavy downpours in neighbouring Mizoram and Manipur have further worsened the situation, causing backflow into Assam’s low-lying areas.

In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Barak Valley and assessed the situation firsthand. He is scheduled to revisit the Sribhumi district in two days to inspect the worst-affected areas and hold a comprehensive review meeting.

According to Minister Paul, over 1,100 revenue villages have been affected—more than 500 in Sribhumi, 300 in Hailakandi, and 300 in Cachar districts. These areas will be reviewed once floodwaters begin to recede in the coming days.

Chief Minister Sarma has directed all district administrations to stock baby food, ensure food supplies in relief camps, and prepare cattle feed for affected livestock.

Medical and veterinary teams have been deployed and are actively engaged in relief efforts across the valley. The state government is committed to swift rehabilitation and continued monitoring of the flood-hit regions.
