A shocking remark by BJP legislator Bijoy Malakar has triggered political outrage after he compared a former constituency in Assam’s Sribhumi area to Pakistan during a public event attended by state minister Krishnaendu Paul and senior government officials.
Speaking at a gathering following an official inspection of a ₹100-crore fisheries project in Son Beel, Malakar, who represents the Ramkrishnanagar constituency, said that certain areas—particularly Son Beel and its surroundings—were earlier part of the South Karimganj constituency, which he controversially referred to as “Pakistan.”
“These areas were earlier under South Karimganj, and no development took place because the MLA belonged to one community while the people living there were from another,” Malakar said. “Now, after delimitation, these areas fall under the Patharkandi constituency. They are no longer part of Pakistan but have joined Hindustan. Development will finally begin here,” he added.

The event, led by Fisheries Minister Krishnaendu Paul, included senior state officials such as the Additional Chief Secretary and Director of the Fisheries Department. The controversial statement was made while addressing the people of Fakua and Nagendranagar villages at the beginning of Malakar’s speech.
Malakar’s remarks have drawn severe criticism from various quarters, with many accusing him of making communal and divisive comments that equate parts of Assam to enemy territory based on demographic composition. Political observers say the statement could escalate tensions in the sensitive Barak Valley region.
As of now, no official statement has been released by the BJP or the state government in response to the controversy.
