Congress MP backs 'shoot at sight' diktat, blames Himanta for theorizing ‘two religions'

Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has come out in support of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s controversial “Shoot at Sight” order against those involved in communal violence, stating that strict action is necessary against any group trying to incite unrest.

Speaking on recent incidents of communal tension in Assam, Bordoloi asserted that such elements must be dealt with firmly, and said the Congress party supports strong punitive action in such cases. However, he raised serious concerns over the state's internal security, questioning how individuals from Bangladesh, if involved, were able to infiltrate and trigger violence despite the presence of border forces and police.

“If these claims are true, it reflects a major failure of the Assam government. With agencies like the police and BSF in place, the continued occurrence of such events makes the situation resemble the kind of unrest seen in Pahalgam,” he remarked, placing responsibility squarely on the Home Minister and the Chief Minister to eliminate such threats.

Bordoloi also criticised CM Sarma for promoting what he described as a divisive “Two Religious Theory” in Assam. He drew a historical parallel to the “Two-Nation Theory” proposed by the RSS and the Muslim League during the time of India’s independence—a theory that was firmly rejected by the Congress and Mahatma Gandhi.

“After joining the BJP, the Chief Minister has embraced a political approach that is encouraging communal polarisation,” Bordoloi said, adding that such policies have emboldened certain groups to resort to violence.
