Diphu police foil trafficking bid, rescue 9-year-old girl abducted from Dimapur

Karbi Anglong Police apprehended two accused on Sunday evening for abducting a 9-year-old girl from Dimapur with the intention of trafficking her.

The two individuals — Nitu Nath and Pratima Rajbongshi alias Mumtaz Begum — both residents of Kachua, Kampur in Nagaon district, were arrested around 6 PM from Rongnihang Pathar in Diphu.

The duo had allegedly posed as tenants and abducted the child on July 3 from Rengmai Colony in Dimapur, Nagaland.

During police interrogation, the accused confessed to selling the minor girl in Arunachal Pradesh. However, their plans were thwarted by the swift and alert action of the Village Defence Party (VDP) in Diphu, who handed them over to local police.

Personnel from the Dimapur Women Police Station arrived in Diphu on Monday and took custody of the arrested traffickers for further legal proceedings.

Authorities in Karbi Anglong have praised the role of the VDP in rescuing the minor and averting a tragic crime.

An investigation is ongoing to determine if the accused are part of a larger trafficking network.
