Gaurav Gogoi questions Assam CM over Zubeen Garg ‘murder’ claim after Singapore verdict
The ruling by a Singapore court declaring the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg as an accidental drowning has triggered fresh political reactions in Assam, with questions being raised over earlier claims of foul play.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on March 25 expressed concern over the divergence between the findings of the Singapore authorities and statements previously made by the Assam government.
His remarks come after Singapore State Coroner Adam Nakhoda ruled that Garg’s death on September 19, 2025, in waters off Lazarus Island was “simply due to an unfortunate and tragic accidental drowning,” dismissing any suspicion of coercion or criminal intent.
The court upheld the findings of the Police Coast Guard, terming the investigation “comprehensive and thorough,” and rejected allegations that the singer had been pushed or forced underwater. The incident had occurred a day before Garg was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival in Singapore, commemorating 60 years of diplomatic ties between India and Singapore.
Reacting to the verdict, Gogoi questioned how the conclusion aligns with earlier assertions by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had stated in the Assembly that the singer’s death was a case of murder.

He also pointed to the involvement of Indian authorities and the Assam Police, who had travelled to Singapore as part of the probe, asking what became of those efforts in light of the court’s findings.
The Congress leader further sought clarity on the status of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Assam government, noting that the latest verdict appears to have granted relief to individuals earlier named in connection with the case.
He said the development has raised more questions regarding the coordination between Indian and Singaporean authorities and the overall pursuit of justice.
The verdict has reignited political debate in Assam, with opposition leaders demanding transparency on the investigation and the conclusions drawn by different agencies in the case.
