Gaurav Gogoi questions “mastermind” behind Zubeen Garg’s murder, accuses Assam CM of voter import plot
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on November 25 demanded that the state government reveal the “real mastermind” behind the killing of singer Zubeen Garg, accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of suppressing key information and misleading the public.
Speaking to reporters at Bishwanath Chariali, Gogoi said, “The names of the killers mentioned in the Assembly today—who was directing them? The mastermind’s name has not been revealed. People in Assam’s villages have lost faith that Zubeen Garg will ever get justice. That is why the Chief Minister is creating confusion through various tactics.”
Responding to the Chief Minister’s remark about a “Pakistan link” in the case, Gogoi said Sarma had “completely failed” in his handling of the investigation. He recalled that the CM had promised on September 10—when the singer was still alive—to make the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report public. “He could not do it then, and he cannot do it now,” Gogoi said, adding that even BJP leaders were embarrassed by Sarma’s statements. “Leaders in Delhi now laugh when they hear him speak. Even journalists find his claims amusing.”
The APCC chief also alleged a larger conspiracy to manipulate the upcoming Assembly elections. Gogoi claimed that recent decisions of the Election Commission appeared to be helping the BJP “form governments through vote theft,” and said Congress had strengthened its Block Level Agents and booth committees to prevent malpractice.

“In order to save his chair, Himanta Biswa Sarma is trying to bring BJP voters from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and get their names enrolled in Assam’s voter list,” he alleged. “A rebellion has already begun among communities, villages, youth, and mothers across Assam. Alarmed, he is preparing fake voter lists.”
Gogoi asserted that Assam’s representatives must be elected only by the people of Assam, adding that the BJP was trying to “import votes” to retain power. He urged political parties and the public to remain vigilant “so that RSS workers from UP and Bihar cannot infiltrate Assam’s voter list.”
Addressing the district booth committee meeting, former APCC president Ripun Bora accused the BJP of failing to deliver development in the last decade. “With no achievements to show, they are now desperately trying to divide people on Hindu-Muslim lines,” he alleged.
Another former APCC president, Bhupen Bora, invoked the cultural legacy of Assam’s icons—from Chaolung Sukapha and Srimanta Sankardev to Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Bishnu Rabha, Bhupen Hazarika, and Zubeen Garg—saying they had built a harmonious and united Assam that the BJP “cannot destroy.”
“Not satisfied with dividing the state, the BJP is now trying to divide even the people who united during Zubeen Garg’s final moments,” he said. “The people of Assam will never allow this.”
