Gaurav Gogoi ‘very smart’: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Congress leader and newly appointed Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi of deliberately delaying the admission of his visit to Pakistan until after assuming his new role.

Sarma said the primary motive behind this concealment was to “dethrone Bhupen Borah,” the former APCC President.

Speaking to the media, Sarma remarked, “He (Gaurav Gogoi) could have admitted that before his appointment. He is very smart. He knows that he has to admit. So, he admitted after taking the appointment letter as the Congress president.” He further criticised Gogoi for making a “very wrong statement” by denying the connection between his Pakistan visit and his wife.

According to the Chief Minister, Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan was independent and had the approval of Pakistan’s Interior Department. “This is about national security, about Bharat. This has nothing to do with elections,” Sarma emphasised.

The Chief Minister also made serious allegations against Gogoi’s wife, claiming she was involved in spying activities against India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB). Sarma said, “His wife was snooping on our IB. I have documents to prove that. It was all because of taking advantage of Tarun Gogoi's position. They crafted their role within the Indian establishment. It was snooping on behalf of a particular climate activist group.”

These remarks come amid heightened political tensions in Assam, with Sarma questioning Gogoi’s loyalty and intentions. The Chief Minister’s comments add another layer to the ongoing debate over Gaurav Gogoi’s Pakistan visit and its implications for national security.
