Genuine Assamese won't protest on the day PM Modi unveils statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil a colossal 125-foot statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan in Lahdoigarh, Holongapar, Jorhat.

This announcement was made by the Assam Chief Minister in a recent statement, highlighting a series of significant events planned for the first week of March this year, aimed at honoring the state’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Speaking to the media, Assam CM said, "There is a section of people when Assam's pride is about to touch the sky then they urge to initiate agitations. PM Modi's visit is nothing but to unveil the 125-foot statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan and on that day if someone is genuinely Assamese, he will not agitate on that. Agitation can be carried out on other days."

Meanwhile, Diganta Tamuli, a Member of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) stated, "Lachit Borphukan is the pride of Assamese people. With Lachit's guidance, the people of Assam moved forward. Every organization in Assam has been vocal about wrongdoings, and even if Lachit Borphukan is not there, there are a thousand Lachit Borphukans. PM Modi will inaugurate Lachit Borphukan on 9th March. We hope there is no protest."

Supporting the same sentiments, All Assam Tai Ahom Student Union spokesperson Basanta Gogoi mentioned, "In a democratic state, protests can be carried out in a democratic manner. However, we should refrain from protesting as Lachit Borphukan is our pride. Lachit Borphukan was a saviour of Assam and we deeply respect him. We desire the inauguration of his statue and as a significant day approaches on 9th March when the Prime Minister will be present nobody should engage in any protest."
