Himanta Biswa Sarma accuses Congress of offending hindu sentiments, highlights party's track record

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to the microblogging site X to lambast Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing the party of consistently offending Hindu sentiments.

In a pointed remark posted on a microblogging site, Sarma highlighted the Congress's track record of allegedly offending Hindu sentiments, stating, "Whether it is to say something wrong about the idol of God or to insult the power of Mother Bhagwati, the Congress party always hurts the sentiments of the Hindu society."

Sarma's scathing remarks came in the wake of Gandhi's recent controversial statement regarding 'Shakti' during a public rally in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded to Gandhi's remarks by lodging a formal complaint with the Election Commission. Terming Gandhi's comments as having a 'misogynistic' undertone, the BJP decried the statement as 'obnoxious' and claimed it had deeply wounded the sentiments of Hindus.

During the rally on February 17, Rahul Gandhi stirred controversy with his statement, "There is a word 'Shakti' in Hinduism. We are fighting against a Shakti." The remark went relatively unnoticed until Prime Minister Narendra Modi seized upon it to frame the upcoming election battle as a clash between those who revere Shakti and those purportedly seeking its destruction.
