Himanta Biswa Sarma: Two IIT Guwahati student radicalized to join ISIS, one detained, another to be trapped today

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed today that one student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have been detained for his ties to the terrorist group ISIS. CM sarma said that there are two students and one have been detained and Assam police will detain the another student today. The two students has reportedly pledged their allegiance to ISIS and have been radicalized as per Chief Minister. 

Speaking on the matter, Chief Minister Sarma expressed deep concern over the incident, stating  that both detained students have been radicalized and are believed to have links with ISIS. The students hail from Batla House in Delhi.

On March 23 when Tauseef Ali Farooqui, a final year Biotechnology student at IIT Guwahati, was taken into custody by Assam Police after allegedly joining ISIS. The arrest was confirmed by Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh.

The latest detainee, a fourth-year Biotechnology student, had recently made alarming statements on social media platforms and through emails indicating his intention to join ISIS. His disappearance from the IIT-Guwahati campus raised immediate concerns, leading to a widespread search operation.

According to police sources, the student, originally from Delhi, was located in Hajo, approximately 30 km from Guwahati, and was promptly detained for interrogation. The revelation of his radicalization and association with ISIS has sent shockwaves through the academic community and law enforcement agencies alike.

This development comes in the wake of heightened vigilance following the arrest of ISIS India head Haris Farooqi in Dhubri district. Farooqi was apprehended after allegedly crossing over from Bangladesh.

Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the government's commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and pledged full cooperation with central agencies to address the threat posed by radicalization.
