Himanta slams misuse of ‘Asom’ tag, alleges Bir Lachit Sena extorting money from Sadiya to Dhubri

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strong warning against individuals misusing the ‘Asom’ tag in their respective names to run organisations and create unrest across lower Assam.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Sarma alleged that some suspicious persons have been exploiting the name ‘Asom’ for personal gain and illegal activities.

Referring specifically to Bir Lachit Sena, the Chief Minister said the group has been involved in extortion, demanding money “from Sadiya to Dhubri.”

He criticised the emergence of what he called a “donation culture” in Assam and asserted that the government would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt public order or malign the state’s name through such activities.

Dr. Sarma further stated that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to take firm action against anyone found collecting money or threatening individuals in the name of social organisations.

Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 27 issued a stern warning against the Veer Lachit Sena, stating that the government is seriously considering stringent action, including a potential ban, against the outfit accused of intimidation, extortion, and creating public disorder across the state.

Addressing the media in Guwahati, CM Sarma said, “Veer Lachit Sena has been creating a disturbing atmosphere in the name of cultural activities and donation drives. They are also causing environmental damage. If necessary, we may have to consider a ban, just like in the case of ULFA(I).”

Without naming anyone directly, the Chief Minister hinted that certain individuals associated with the organisation are already under the scanner of law enforcement. “I am not taking any names, but action will follow,” he added firmly, signalling the state’s growing intolerance towards disruptive elements operating under social or cultural banners.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to upholding peace, order, and accountability across Assam.
