Just like Bhupen Hazarika and Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Zubeen’s legacy won’t be politicised: Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound grief over the death of renowned singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, calling it “unfortunate, piteous, and one of the most painful incidents in Assam’s history.”

Speaking on the controversy and public discourse surrounding the tragedy, Sarma accused certain sections of attempting to politicise the incident for their own agenda.

“Many of these people never listened to a single song of Zubeen Garg when he was alive. Now, after his death, they are trying to exploit his entire ideology and legacy for political purposes,” the Chief Minister said. Drawing parallels with the deaths of past Assamese cultural icons like Bhupen Hazarika, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Sarma stressed that politics did not follow their demise, and he expects the same respect to be maintained for Zubeen Garg.

The CM also pointed out the emergence of “fake fans” in the wake of the singer’s death. “Those who criticised Zubeen Garg during his lifetime are now trying to create an atmosphere to destabilise Assam by presenting themselves as his fans. By taking the actual fans of Zubeen Garg, the BJP will not allow anyone to destabilise Assam at any cost,” Sarma asserted.

He added, “This is the Assam of Bishnu Prasad, Jyoti Prasad, Bhupen Hazarika, and Zubeen Garg. We will never allow anyone to destabilise it.”

Sarma’s remarks come amid widespread public mourning over Zubeen Garg’s death, which has also sparked demands for justice and accountability. While authorities have taken steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, debates over the political use of the tragedy have intensified in the media and public discourse.
