Man-elephant conflict: Wild jumbo tramples woman to death along Assam-Bhutan border, another injured

The issue of wild elephant menace along the border areas with Bhutan remains unresolved by the forest department, persisting day and night.

In a recent incident, a woman fell victim to a wild elephant attack on the Indo-Bhutan border, resulting in her death, while another sustained serious injuries. Tragically, the attack occurred in the late hours of the night of April 12 at Bhutiasa in Bhergaon, Assam.

Amidst the festivities of Rongali Bihu, a somber incident occurred at Bhutiachang in Bhergaon. On Goru Bihu, Gumi Orang, a 50-year-old woman, lost her life to a wild elephant attack, leaving her husband Raju Orang injured. The community was deeply shaken by this event.

The conflict between humans and elephants escalates continuously along the Indo-Bhutan border areas of Udalguri district, instilling fear among the residents of Bhergaon.

The tragic episode unfolded at Basugaon in Bhutiachang during the early hours of the morning amid the celebration of Gau Bihu. Gumi Orang was fatally attacked by an elephant at her residence, and her husband Raju Orang sustained critical injuries while trying to save her life. Their home was ravaged by the wild elephants.

Despite repeated appeals to the divisional authorities, the BTR administration, and the forest department have failed to address the elephant-human conflict effectively. The lack of action has led to numerous casualties, displacement of families, and loss of wildlife.

Raveen Gowala, a local youth leader and environmental activist, has urged the government to compensate the families of the deceased adequately and implement sustainable solutions to mitigate the elephant-man conflict permanently.
