Massive rally in Kokrajhar renews call for separate Kamatapur state, ST status for Koch-Rajbongshis

The demand for a separate Kamatapur state gained renewed momentum on October 10 as the Kamatapur State Demand Council (KSDC) held a massive rally in Kokrajhar, the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Organised by the Kokrajhar District Committee of the KSDC, the protest also pressed for the long-pending demand of granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Koch-Rajbongshi community and called for a tripartite dialogue involving the Centre, the Assam government, and the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO).

Led by KSDC Kokrajhar District President Baniram Barman, the rally began at the Dimlgaon Public Playground and passed through key areas of the town before concluding at the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) in Titaguri. Protesters carried placards and shouted slogans reiterating their core demands.

A memorandum addressed to the President of India, the Prime Minister, and the Union Home Minister was submitted through the BDO, urging immediate government intervention.

Speaking to reporters, Baniram Barman cautioned that continued inaction could have political repercussions. “The BJP government must fulfil our demands or be ready to face consequences in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections,” he said, emphasising that the Koch-Rajbongshi community’s aspirations could no longer be ignored.
