Morigaon police achieve 39% conviction rate; two criminals awarded heavy sentences

The Morigaon Police have received appreciation for their commendable steps in ensuring punishment for criminals, achieving a conviction rate of 39% till May this year.

In a significant development on Wednesday, two major verdicts were pronounced by Morigaon’s courts:

In a brutal murder case from 2023, Dipu Nath, a resident of Habiborongabari village under Mikirbheta Police Station, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Morigaon District and Sessions Court for murdering his wife in a barbaric manner.

In another key judgment, notorious criminal Ziarul Islam, who had escaped from Morigaon District Jail, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Morigaon POCSO Special Court for offences under the POCSO Act. Additionally, for his jailbreak, he was awarded another 5 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Notably, Ziarul Islam’s sister, Hasina Begum, was also convicted and sentenced to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment for aiding in his escape from jail.

Morigaon SP (Crime) stated that these verdicts reflect the district police’s unwavering commitment to justice and a zero-tolerance policy toward serious crimes and absconding criminals.
