Nine arrested for attacking police during eviction drive in Assam’s Paikan forest area

Nine individuals have been arrested for attacking police personnel during an eviction drive in the Paikan forest area, officials confirmed. 

The incident took place on Thursday when a group of encroachers attempted to obstruct the eviction operation being carried out jointly by the police and the forest department.

Tensions escalated as some among the group began pelting stones at officials. In response to the deteriorating situation, the police were compelled to open fire. 

The firing resulted in the death of two alleged encroachers, while several police and forest officials sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Following Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s strong statement promising action against those who attacked on-duty police personnel, the administration swung into action. 

Security forces collected video evidence from the site and began identifying the attackers. Based on this, a list of suspects was prepared, and so far, nine individuals involved in the assault on police have been apprehended.

The situation remains under control as authorities continue to monitor the area for further unrest.
