As Assam gears up for the upcoming panchayat elections, a controversial statement by Digboi MLA Suren Phukan has stirred widespread criticism and gone viral on social media.
While addressing an election meeting at Makum Gorkha Samaj Naamghar in Tinsukia district, Phukan reportedly said that opposition ward members will not receive any government schemes.
He justified his stance by saying, "The opposition has neither a government nor a president. So, they don’t deserve the benefits of government schemes."
The controversial comment has raised concerns about the fair distribution of public welfare schemes and the politicization of developmental benefits.
Phukan implied that the decision of who gets or doesn’t get schemes lies with him, further intensifying the backlash from the civil society.
