People of Assam want to see Himanta behind bars, not in office: Gaurav Gogoi

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that his government has rendered people from every community in the state homeless through arbitrary eviction drives.

Addressing the media, Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of targeting all sections of society, including Bengalis, tribals, religious minorities, Scheduled Castes, and Other Backwards Classes. He claimed that the government’s actions, carried out under the guise of reclaiming land, had left thousands of families without shelter.

“The Chief Minister has spared no one in his greed to accumulate property in the name of his family. They have made people from all communities homeless by bulldozing their houses,” Gogoi said. He further alleged that the widespread displacement has eroded public trust, leading to a steady decline in the government’s popularity.

Taking his criticism a step further, the Congress leader remarked that people of Assam would eventually want to see Himanta Biswa Sarma not as the Chief Minister but behind bars for what he described as “injustice and misuse of power.”

The remarks come amid growing debates over eviction drives and land recovery initiatives launched by the state government, which it maintains are aimed at clearing encroached government and forest land. However, opposition parties have repeatedly accused the ruling BJP of using the exercise selectively to target vulnerable communities.
