PM Modi in Guwahati: Congress turned government jobs into a “Parchi–Kharchi” affair
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20 addressed a public gathering in Guwahati after inaugurating the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport, underscoring the role of modern infrastructure in driving economic growth and restoring confidence in Assam and the Northeast.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said that facilities such as modern airports and improved connectivity infrastructure serve as gateways to new opportunities for any state. He remarked that such developments reflect a state’s rising confidence and reinforce public trust.
“When you see the airports and highways in Assam, you yourself will say that justice is now being done to Assam,” he said, alleging that the development of Assam and the Northeast was neglected during previous Congress-led governments.

Taking a swipe at the opposition, PM Modi stated that his government was correcting the mistakes made over the past six to seven decades. Emphasising his personal connection with the region, he added, “It does not matter if people do not visit the Northeast; I feel at home here.”
The Prime Minister also praised Assam’s administrative performance, noting that the state ranks first in the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He contrasted the present system with past practices, alleging that during the Congress regime, government jobs could not be obtained without “parchi and kharchi” (recommendation and bribery). “Today, thousands of youths are getting jobs without parchi and kharchi,” he said.
The inauguration of the new terminal is expected to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity and improve air connectivity, further strengthening Assam’s position as a key gateway to the Northeast.
