PM Modi leads Guwahati roadshow, accuses Congress of protecting illegal migrants
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20 led a roadshow from Sarsajai to the Assam BJP headquarters in Guwahati and addressed a large public rally, where he strongly pitched Assam and the Northeast as emerging gateways to India’s development while launching a sharp attack on the Congress over infiltration and governance issues.
The roadshow began outside the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai on National Highway 27, and concluded at the state BJP headquarters near Basistha Chariali.
Modi, who was sitting in the front of his black SUV, was seen waving to the enthusiastic crowd that gathered on both sides of the road. The air reverberated with resounding chants of 'Modi-ji zindabad' and 'Bharat Mata ki jai', creating an electrifying atmosphere.
Earlier in the day, addressing a gathering, the Prime Minister said the Centre was taking strict steps to stop infiltration, which he described as a serious threat to Assam’s security, identity, and demographic balance.
He said the Election Commission had initiated the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to ensure that infiltrators are kept out of the electoral process.
However, PM Modi alleged that “deshdrohis” were attempting to shield infiltrators for political gains. Without naming individuals, he accused the Congress of protecting illegal migrants who, he claimed, had encroached upon forest land and posed a threat to Assam’s cultural identity and internal security.

“Congress gave protection to infiltrators who grabbed forests and land in Assam. This endangered the state’s identity and security,” the Prime Minister said, adding that such policies were driven by vote-bank politics.
Highlighting the broader development narrative, PM Modi said Assam and the entire Northeast were rapidly becoming key gateways to India’s growth story. He asserted that every state and region had an important role to play in the mission of building a developed India.
The Prime Minister further stated that the BJP-led government was correcting the mistakes that the Congress had made over several decades in the Northeast.
“The development of Assam and the Northeast was never part of the Congress agenda,” he said, contrasting it with the current government’s focus on infrastructure, connectivity, and economic opportunities in the region.
PM Modi’s roadshow and rally come amid heightened political activity in Assam ahead of the next Assembly elections, with issues of development, national security, and infiltration emerging as central themes in the BJP’s campaign.
