Political parties trying to incite violence in Assam by provoking Zubeen’s fans: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 15 condemned the violent protests that broke out during the transfer of the accused in the Zubeen Garg death case to Baksa district Jail, accusing political parties of attempting to fuel unrest in the state.
“Political parties are trying to incite violence in Assam by provoking Zubeen’s fans,” the Chief Minister said, urging people to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed unhindered. “The government will ensure a fair and transparent probe into the matter,” he added.
Tension gripped parts of Rangia and Mussalpur on October 15 as Assam Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse an agitated mob that hurled stones at vehicles carrying the five accused to Baksa district Jail, police said.
A senior police officer confirmed that several people, including a policewoman, were injured in the violence. The mob also damaged vehicles, smashing their glass panes, while some journalists covering the incident were reportedly hit by stones.

A large crowd had gathered outside the prison in the Mussalpur area, and as the convoy transporting the accused arrived, protesters began pelting stones at the vehicles. Police quickly intervened to bring the situation under control, using mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The five accused — NorthEast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s cousin Sandipan Garg, and his personal security officers Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya — were being lodged in Baksa District Jail following the completion of their 14-day judicial custody period.
Chief Minister Sarma said the government viewed the incident seriously and warned that any attempt to disrupt peace and harmony in the state would be dealt with firmly. “Emotions are understandable, but no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. Justice will take its own course,” he said.
