Protesters torch KAAC chief Tuliram Ronghang’s residence in Donkamokam amid land row

Tensions in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district escalated sharply on December 22 after protesters allegedly set fire to the residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Dr. Tuliram Ronghang in Donkamokam.

According to local sources, the arson took place in the afternoon amid sustained unrest over land encroachment issues in the district, particularly in areas falling under the Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) near Kheroni. The incident is being linked to growing anger over the council’s actions and decisions related to the eviction of illegal settlements from protected grazing lands.

Eyewitnesses said the situation turned volatile as demonstrators targeted the KAAC chief’s residence, triggering panic in the locality. The extent of damage to the property is yet to be officially assessed, and there has been no confirmation of injuries so far.

An investigation is expected to be launched to identify those involved in the arson and to ascertain the exact sequence of events.

The attack on the residence of the KAAC chief marks a serious escalation in the ongoing agitation over land and grazing reserves, raising concerns about law and order as tensions continue to simmer across parts of Karbi Anglong district.
