Protestors torch houses, shops of 'non tribal' settlers in West Karbi Anglong after burning CEM house

The situation in West Karbi Anglong district turned highly volatile on December 22 evening after protesters allegedly set fire to several shops and residential houses in areas under Kheroni Police Station.

According to local sources, the incidents of arson occurred around 5.30 pm amid ongoing protests linked to demands and opposition surrounding eviction drives on reserved grazing lands under Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) areas. 

The agitation has intensified over the past few days, marked by road blockades and confrontations with authorities.

The latest violence comes hours after reports of arson targeting the residence of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member, further heightening tensions in the district. 

Panic gripped residents as flames engulfed properties, forcing many to flee the affected localities.

Heavy security deployment has been made in and around Kheroni to bring the situation under control. Police and administrative officials are monitoring the situation closely, though there is no immediate confirmation of casualties or arrests.

Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace and refrain from violence, assuring that efforts are underway to restore normalcy and address grievances through lawful means.
