Rakibul Hussain dodges questions on opposition alliance; slams CM for 'tarnishing' Assam police image

Congress MP Rakibul Hussain appeared visibly agitated when questioned about the Opposition Unity Platform during a party workers' meeting held today at Rajiv Bhawan in Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon district.

After the meeting, when journalists asked about the prospects of an opposition alliance, the MP appeared uncomfortable.

Instead of directly addressing the question, he diverted attention by pointing out that despite being allies, the BJP and AGP are contesting separately in the ongoing Panchayat elections—subtly avoiding a direct comment on the opposition unity.

Speaking further, Rakibul sharply criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent comments on the police force. He alleged that the Chief Minister has tarnished the dignity of the Assam Police.

“Only a fraction of the police force—just about one percent—upholds the true glory of the department,” he said, condemning the behavior of certain police officials as “reprehensible.”

The MP’s remarks reflect growing political tensions in the state amid the ongoing Panchayat polls and underline the uneasy discourse around alliances and institutional integrity.
