Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on September 21 visited Sonapur to inspect potential locations for the cremation of late singer Zubeen Garg.
The visit came amid discussions between the state government and Zubeen’s family regarding the final arrangements for his last rites.
During the inspection, Pegu reviewed several proposed sites, including the land of the North East Tribal Museum at Nazirakhat, a stretch of government land near the National Highway at Sonapur Barkhat, and another plot of government land located near the National Highway at Hatimura.
Officials accompanying the minister carried out a preliminary assessment of the site's suitability in terms of accessibility, space, and arrangements for large gatherings expected during the funeral.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also joined the review process through a video call, where he examined the proposed sites remotely and held discussions with the Secretary to ensure that the final arrangements are in accordance with both the family’s wishes and the sentiments of the people.
While the government has suggested multiple options, the minister reiterated that the final decision regarding the cremation site will rest with Zubeen Garg’s family.
