As the state gears up for the grand celebration of Bhogali Bihu, people gathered in huge numbers across ponds and lakes to engage in community fishing to mark, the eve of the festival, known as Uruka.


The tradition of sharing a hearty meal and engaging in communal activities underscores the essence of this festival.  


A highlight of the celebrations is the tradition of community fishing, an age-old practice that fosters camaraderie among locals. Gereki Beel in Tezpur witnessed a massive gathering today as thousands of people took part in this cherished ritual.  


This historic wetland holds a special place in Assam’s cultural tapestry. It is said that iconic figures like Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha and Bhupen Hazarika once participated in fishing activities here, adding to its legendary status.  


The festivities at Gereki Beel not only keep traditions alive but also serve as a reminder of the enduring bond between the people and their cultural heritage.
