Vigilance remains top priority amidst tense situation in Manipur: Cachar SP

Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta provided details regarding the handling of bodies of 10 suspected 'militants' that were handed over to the Hmar community people today, November 16.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mahatta disclosed that 10 bodies, which belonged to individuals killed in a recent encounter in Manipur, were brought to Silchar Medical College for post-mortem examinations.

The deceased were part of an incident that has intensified the fragile situation in the neighboring state. According to Mahatta, arrangements were made for the bodies to be airlifted to Churachandpur to be returned to their grieving families. “There were attempts by certain groups to disrupt the process,” Mahatta stated, acknowledging the tension on the ground. However, effective dialogue with those individuals and coordinated efforts with the Manipur Police ensured that the bodies were safely transported by air to Churachandpur without further complications.

SP Mahatta underscored the commitment of the Assam Police to maintain peace, emphasizing that all necessary precautions were being implemented to prevent any law and order issues from escalating in the region. In addition, a case has been registered against individuals involved in an incident of stone-pelting, and further actions will be taken against those responsible.

Expressing concern over the evolving situation in the neighboring state, Mahatta reassured that vigilance remains a top priority to curb any potential disturbances that may impact Assam’s stability.
