IMPHAL: Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu of Manipur scripted history by setting a new world record in Clean and Jerk as she lifted 119 kg in the women 49 kg category at Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent yesterday. The previous world record was  118 kg.

Chanu in total lifted 205 kg (86+119) at the championship, which broke another national record as well, and also she had been able to clinch a bronze medal.

Vaijay Sharma, Chief National coach, clarified that Mirabai will qualify for Tokyo Olympics once she takes part in the Asian Championships as she had already taken part in six designated events in the suggested period of time which fulfilled the requirement for the event.

Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs & Sports Kiren Rijiju, Indian weightlifters Kumar Sivalingam, Jeremy Lalrinnunga congratulated Mirabai Chanu on her achievement.
