Shillong, June 17, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, along with  met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday with cabinet colleagues AL Hek, Banteidor Lyngdoh, Samlin Malgniang and Tura Lok Sabha MP Agatha K. Sangma to discuss a number of issues, including the exciting prospect of a President's retreat in our very own Northeast!

During the meeting, the Meghalaya Chief Minister brought up a rather interesting matter. Sangma asked why does the President of India not have a retreat in the Northeastern region of India?

Currently, there are two Presidential retreats in India -- the Retreat Building in Shimla and the Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad -- which are indicative of the integrative role of the Office of the President of India in our country.

These locations, one in North and another in South, symbolise unity of our country and unity of our diverse cultures and people. Thus, to bring aid the bringing of the Northeast into the mainstream discussions, the Meghalaya Chief Minister has suggested establishment of a Presidential Retreat in Northeast, preferably in Shillong, which is the historical capital of Northeast India.

The Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister of the importance of a Presidential Retreat in Shillong, where the President would spend at least two weeks in a year. Sangma said that this would send a very strong message of inclusiveness and a strong message of importance towards Northeast being accorded by the Central Government.

What do you guys think of the Meghalaya Chief Minister's suggestion? Yay or nay?
