Meghalaya Resolves to Eliminate Malaria by 2030

Shillong, June 30, 2019:

The Meghalaya Government has resolved to eliminate the deadly disease 'malaria' by the year 2030. This 'Mission 2030' of the Meghalaya administration is well within its grasp, as an official of state health department has stated that the state has been able to bring down the Malaria cases by 87% in the last three years.

As per the National Framework for Malaria Elimination of the Union Home Ministry, a concerted effort is mandated from the state government departments, armed forces and private partners to achieve the goal of malaria elimination by 2030.

It has been has reported that the Meghalaya official further stated that the control and prevention of malaria and other vector-borne diseases should not be left to the health department alone as per the International campaign ‘Zero Malaria Starts Me’, which was the theme for this year’s World Malaria Day observed globally on April 25.

Like malaria in mainland India, malaria in Meghalaya is complex, with both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax parasites in circulation, multiple Anopheles vector species, and reports of both unusual and severe malaria syndromes across all age groups.

While reduction in malaria case incidence and related deaths is clear, the changes in malaria transmission and clinical manifestation have not been characterized.

Routine epidemiology and vector surveillance combined with real-time data reporting are essential for the continued reduction and eventual elimination of malaria in Meghalaya, experts have suggested.

It may be mentioned that the State of Meghalaya has 5 (five) malaria Units and 77 Malaria Clinics.
