Lucknow: The Taj Mahal, India's most famous tourist site will reopen on Wednesday, the government announced, two months after it was closed due to a devastating coronavirus outbreak that ravaged the country.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has announced that starting June 16th all centrally protected monuments, sites, and museums will be open to the public.

" All CPMs, sites & Museums under @ASIGoI to be opened from 16th June 2021. The opening will be in strict compliance with local administration orders," the ASI wrote on Twitter.

In April and May, the huge nation of 1.3 billion people saw a spike in cases and deaths, prompting state and national officials to impose lockdowns and other restrictions to stop the virus from spreading.

Infections have been declining in recent weeks with major cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai removing the certain restrictions on movement and activities.

The Taj Mahal, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World was closed in March of last year when India enacted one of the toughest lockdowns in the world at the outset of the pandemic.
