Wipro & Ajiz Premji Foundation Pledge Rs 1,125 Crore to Help India Tackle COVID-19 Crisis

"These resources will help enable the dedicated medical and service fraternity in the frontline of the battle against the pandemic and in mitigating its wide-ranging human impact, particularly on the most disadvantaged of our society. Integrated action will be taken for a comprehensive on-the-ground response in specific geographies, focused on immediate humanitarian aid, and augmentation of healthcare capacity, including containing the COVID-19 outbreak and treating those affected by it," said Wipro and Ajiz Premji Foundation in a joint statement.

"These responses will be carefully coordinated with relevant government institutions and would be executed by the Azim Premji Foundation’s 1600-person team, in collaboration with many of its over 350 strong civil society partners, who have a deep presence across the country," the statement added.

The two entities believe that the sum would leverage the technology expertise, sourcing systems, infrastructure, and distribution reach of Wipro.

It may be mentioned here that the Tata Trusts has earlier pledged a sum of Rs 500 crore to aid in India’s fight against COVID-19.

“The current situation in India and across the world is of grave concern and needs immediate action. The Tata Trusts and the Tata group companies have in the last risen to the needs of the nation. At this moment, the need of the hour is greater than any other time”, the group wrote in a statement that was undersigned by Chairman Ratan Tata himself.

Tata Trusts has also pledged a sum of Rs 500 crores for personal protective equipment for the medical personnel on the frontlines, respiratory systems for treating increasing cases, testing kits to increase per capita testing, modular treatment for infected patients, and knowledge management and training of health workers and the public.

Tata Sons, the holding firm of the Tata group companies, has also announced an additional Rs 1,000 crore support towards COVID-19 and related activities over and above Rs 500 crore pledged by Tata Trusts.

It may be mentioned here that the number of cases of the new coronavirus or COVID-19 across the world have risen to 935,957, with 47,245 cases reported so far. 194,286 people have recovered so far.

Of the 658,816 cases which are active, 35,610 (or 5%) are said to be in critical condition. In the United States, 215,215 people have been infected so far (5,110 have died). In India, cases have risen to 1,998 and 58 people have died from complications related to the COVID-19.
