Arunachal Congress candidate Yumlam Achung set to challenge sitting BJP MLA Techi Kaso in Itanagar

Yumlam Achung, a social worker, is set to challenge the 15-year reign of Techi Kaso, the sitting MLA of Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

The Congress party has once again chosen Achung as their candidate for the 13th Itanagar Assembly constituency, the most populous of the 60 constituencies in the state.

Achung previously held the position of President of the Itanagar Market Welfare Association for three consecutive terms before contesting for the Itanagar assembly seat in 2019.

However, he lost to the current MLA Kaso, who was a JDU candidate at the time. In the 2019 elections, Kaso received 12162 votes, while Kipa Babu, the BJP candidate, garnered 11860 votes.

Achung, representing the Congress party, secured 2173 votes.

Achung believes that the public is ready for change, citing strong anti-incumbency sentiments against the sitting MLA.

He claims that the Congress party, which respects democracy and opposes autocracy, is the only party that can protect the citizens.

Achung alleges that the BJP may resort to using money and power to secure the Itanagar MLA seat. He appeals to the public to vote for the Congress party, promising to work for communal harmony and improve infrastructure in the capital, including education, roads, hospitals, and safety measures such as CCTV installation.

Speaking to India Today NE, the Congress candidates said, "Only Congress can save the citizens as this party respects democracy and against the principle of autocracy which BJP government is adopting. Public support is with me but the BJP party can again use money and power to grab the MLA seat of Itanagar. I won three times unopposed as Market President in Itanagar and I know the pulse as I worked with various social in capital. Outsiders and non-native comprises 60 per cent population in the capital and they know how I serve for their welfare and if I come to power there will be no law and order or threat problems to them. Congress made India and its the party which knows the problems of the poor and deprived ones.I appeal all to vote for Congress as it follows the principle of secularism and it will work for communal harmony of all irrespective to any religion, caste or creed. Capital needs good infrastructures in all spheres like education, roads hospitals, and CCTV installation for safety but till now it has been deprived of all like megacities."
