'Deepor Beel' Locals Risking their Own Lives to Save Elephants

Guwahati, July 23, 2019:

The railway track through the 'Deepor Beel' has been a major cause of conflict among the people of the region and the forest and railway authorities.

Despite the efforts of the locals to save the elephants, 14 elephants were killed while crossing the railway track till 2014.

The local guardians of the elephants, Lakhindra Terang, Hareswar Tumung, Bijay Rabha, and Pradip Kalita have been protecting the wild elephants from being hit by any train or vehicle in the region. Since then, no deaths have been reported so far.

But the issue has not yet stopped as the double-track railway have been sanctioned through the beel and people in the area have raised they voice loud against the move of the State government and Northeast Frontier Railway.

The locals said, “Our people have been saving the elephants since January 2014. From then, not a single casualty has been reported. That is our commitment to conserve our ecology. At any cost, be it our own lives. We have been trying to stop doubling of railway track passing through Deepor Beel and Rani Reserve Forest.”
